Pasterze glacier is located in Austria.
Participants are requested to check they have valid visas from Italy to Austria and back.
Saturday 09: Departure in the afternoon; Dinner and accommodation in Heilingenblut
Sunday 10: Hike on the glacier; in case of bad weather glaciological explanation from the panoramic Tourist Center at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe and visit to the mountain museum.
Guides: Costanza Del Gobbo PhD (Institute of Polar Sciences, CNR), two mountain guides.
With approximately 8.2 km in length, the Pasterze is the largest and longest glacier in Austria and the Eastern Alps. It is located in the Grossglockner group, the highest Austrian peak, in the High Tauern mountain range (Carinthia). The glacier on average is currently decreasing by about 50 m each year while volume decreased by about 50% since the first measurements were made in 1851. The glacier is part of the High Tauern National Park and from both the panoramic view close to the local museum at the end of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, and with an easy walk in the bottom valley, it is possible to see how fast this valley glacier shrank in the last 20 years.

Programme
Saturday 9th September:
14:00: Departure from Trieste – Piazza Oberdan
18:00: Arrival at the Hotel in Heilingenblut
19:30: Dinner in a local restaurant
Sunday 10th September:
8:00: Departure from the Hotel to the Visitor Center of Pasterze glacier (30-40 min)
9:30: Cable car to Pasterze Glacier (about 30 min to get everyone up to the glacier)
10:30 – 13:00: Hike of about 1 hour to reach glaciated areas, discussion about glaciology etc, return to cable car (1 hour)
13:00 – 13:30: Cable car to Visitor Center
~13:30/14:00: Lunch at the Visitor Center
14:30 – 15:00: Departure for Trieste
18:00 – 19:00: Arrival in Trieste ( during icebreaker of INSTANT Conference)
Fees include:
