Sunday 10: Demanding hike to Mount Canin – in case of bad weather, short tour close to the Gilberti Hut seeking glacial deposits and glaciokarst features
Guides: Renato R. Colucci (Institute of Polar Science, CNR); two mountains guides.
From the small mountain village of Sella Nevea (1124 m), in the Julian Alps, a cable car will bring the group up to the Gilberti Hut (1830 m). From here, thanks to a rather demanding hiking walk (about 450 m in altitude), we will reach after almost 1.5-2 hours the terminal moraines of the Canin glacier (2200 m a.s.l). All the area is characterized by well-preserved sets of Holocene moraines and glacial geomorphologies, in a typical high altitude glaciokarst landscape.
In case of unfavorable weather, a shorter path close to the Gilberti hut will allow the group to see a small glacial body from the Little Ice Age but still active, as well as several glaciokarst features in the area.
